Halo Wars 1 is relatively less detailed, but everything is very easy to identify. I'll use Halo Wars 1 and Halo Wars 2, two RTS games. The problem he's concerned about is a kind of detail that makes the screen too "busy". Graphics packs like we have now don't fix the primary problem that actually stopped people from playing, which was the UI being obtuse, inconsistent, and all-around unpleasant to use. If you tried and failed before with a graphics pack installed, I severely doubt the update is going to make the difference. In addition, having the mouse to fall back on when you're not familiar with the shortcuts is massively useful for new players. Anything to do with designation/selection of areas, or picking things out of large grids or lists, is inherently far faster to do with a mouse to click on the specific things you want (rather than ticking over to it 1-by-1 or 10-by-10). Playing with a mouse can be slower for some specific kinds of action. In addition, Tarn has stated that the release will come with actual tutorialization now (whether this will be special "tutorial worlds" or a softer approach like Oxygen Not Included uses has yet to be decided). It has actually fixed a wide range of UX issues and become far neater and easier to read, comprehend and control, and particularly problematic aspects of the actual functionality have been reworked (labor and squad management for a couple of big examples). The game will not be remotely as hard to wrap your head around, because first and foremost, the UI isn't painful to use now. The game will still be hard to wrap your head around for people who aren't actually committed Tldr: dwarf fortress is more complicated, but rimworld is a lot harder While in rimworld you exist on a flat plain, you can build walls to block movement, and build a roof on top of the walls, but you can’t go underground or make a two story building. Also by floors i mean z levels, you can dig hundreds of floors down, or build multi-story castles. Dwarf fortress has actual lakes rivers and oceans that with enough creativity you can drain divert or use to power machhines that pump lava hundreds of floors to be used in forges. Rimword doesnt have real liquids, its either water or its not, and its only function is to slow or block movement. Its not a simulation its a game and this game expects you to either know what you’re doing, or it expects you to die to the increasing raids.ĭwarf fortress IS a lot more complicated. If you have 50 enemies expect a lot of raids, while rimworld has timed raids, or the enemies could just ignore you completely in df, and 10 years go by without a siege. In rimworld they will literally show up and bomb your base killing everyone with no way to defend against it outside of having your own bombs to fire back and/or going outside of your base to fight them.ĭwarf fortress very much has more dangerous threats and more deadly situations, and oftentimes will absolutely kill you with impossible odds, because its more simulation than game. You can solve every external threat in dwarf fortress by walling yourself off from the outside world.
